The situation

The introduction of the DRG system requires hospitals and clinics to deal with comprehensive changes in their modes of operation. The full and correct codification of diagnoses and procedures / therapies is an independent prerequisite for long-term revenue assurance in the compensation system of the DRG.

The problem

Houses that have switched their accounting to DRG have confirmed deficits during encoding – especially internal transfers (to other wards, intensive care units, etc.) as well as the interfaces to areas of operation such as e.g. laboratories, blood banks, microbiology, pathology, endoscopy, x-rays, etc. – numerous DRG relevant secondary diagnosis are systematically overlooked.

Possible consequences

Small losses as well as inapplicably low Case Mix Indexes (CMI) can lead to significant economic losses.
